Dutch architectural firms generated over 2 billion euros annually from international projects by 2024. The global market treats Dutch architecture as a premium product.

Nederlânske arsjitekteburos generearren mear as 2 miljard euro per jier út ynternasjonale projekten yn 2024. OMA fan Rem Koolhaas, UNStudio, Mecanoo, en in hantsjefol oare Nederlânske praktiken bepale no de skylines fan Beijing oant New York. De wrâldmerk behannelet Nederlânske arsjitektuer as in premiumproduk.

De Nederlânske oanpak fan bouwen ferskilt fan Dútske of Amerikaanske tradysjes. Arsjitekten yn Nederlân bestudearren hoe't se praktyske problemen oplosse koene mei beheinde romte en lege budzjetten. Flak lân en in tichte befolking twongen ta ynnovaasje. De nei-oarlochske werboutiid skoep in generaasje bouers dy't it lân goedkeap mar goed wer opbouwe moasten. Dat pragmatisme bleau hingjen. Doe't Rem Koolhaas yn de jierren tachtich opkaam, joech syn radikale funksjonalisme en teoretysk skriuwen Nederlânske arsjitektuer yntelektueel gewicht. Ynienen wiene Nederlânske arsjitekten net allinne effisjint, se wiene yntelektueel serieus.

It omsetferhaal kloppet, mar is beheind. Fiif of seis grutte buros fange it meastepart fan de 2 miljard euro. Lytsere Nederlânske buros wrakselje om wrâldwiid te konkurrearjen. It prestiizje fan Nederlânske arsjitektuer ferberget in ûngemaklik feit: it Nederlânske eksportmodel wurket it bêst foar rike kliïnten yn rike stêden. As OMA in museum of in lukse toer ûntwerpt, makket it projekt foarsiden en lûkt it mear betelle wurk oan. Underwilens krije sosjale hûsfesting en fernakulêre bou minder omtinken en minder winst. De arsjitektuerskoallen leare it prestiizjeuze paad.

Midden-Easterse rykdom wol de namme Koolhaas of UNStudio op it briefpapier like graach as it ûntwerp. Sineeske stêden kopiearje Nederlânske stedeboulike modellen om't se yn hege tichtens wurkje. De eksport is net ien arsjitektuer. It is in Nederlânske manier fan tinken oer hoe't minsken gebouwen brûke. Dy manier wurket. It reizget om't it echte problemen oplost.

De Nederlanners eksportearren gjin arsjitektuer nei de wrâld. Se eksportearren dissipline. Of dat wat de wrâld werklik nedich hat, bliuwt ûndúdlik.

Dutch architectural firms generated over 2 billion euros annually from international projects by 2024. Rem Koolhaas's OMA, UNStudio, Mecanoo, and a handful of other Dutch practices now shape skylines from Beijing to New York. The global market treats Dutch architecture as a premium product.

The Dutch approach to building differs from German or American traditions. Architects in the Netherlands studied how to solve practical problems with limited space and low budgets. Flat land and dense populations forced innovation. The postwar reconstruction years created a generation of builders who had to remake the country cheaply but well. That pragmatism stuck. When Rem Koolhaas emerged in the 1980s, his radical functionalism and theoretical writing gave Dutch architecture intellectual weight. Suddenly Dutch architects were not just efficient, they were intellectually serious.

The revenue story is real but narrow. Five or six major practices capture most of the 2 billion euros. Smaller Dutch firms struggle to compete globally. The prestige of Dutch architecture masks an uncomfortable fact: the Dutch export model works best for wealthy clients in wealthy cities. When OMA designs a museum or luxury tower, the project makes headlines and pulls in more high-paying work. Meanwhile, social housing and vernacular building receive less attention and less profit. The architecture schools teach the prestige path. Most graduates leave for German or American firms anyway.

What other countries actually buy is the method, not the buildings themselves. American tech companies hire Dutch practices because they offer process: space planning, material efficiency, renovation in stages, cost control. Middle Eastern wealth wants the name Koolhaas or UNStudio on the letterhead as much as the design. Chinese cities copy Dutch urban planning models because they work in high density. The export is not one architecture. It is a Dutch way of thinking about how humans use buildings. That way works. It travels because it solves real problems.

The Dutch did not export architecture to the world. They exported discipline. Whether that is what the world actually needs remains unclear.
