What they mention less: Lula negotiated trade deals with Japan, sought investment from the Gulf states, and refused to cut ties with China despite US pressure. He pursues Brazilian interests, not an ideological agenda.
Progressive media created a Lula that never existed. The real Lula is a politician who emerged from labor struggles but learned the hard way that revolutions impoverish working people. He delivers social programs through state capitalism, pragmatic diplomacy, and measured economics. He is not what you read in the Guardian. That may disappoint his admirers in Brooklyn and Berlin. It keeps Brazil functioning for Brazilians.
