The Real Reason Diplomacy Keeps Failing in the Middle East

Middle East peace talks fail not because of complex geopolitics but because defense contractors and oil companies profit from conflict. The incentives are backward.
The Houthi Red Sea blockade caused significant disruption to world trade during 2024. Diplomats talked for months about measures to build confidence while weapons dealers sold arms to multiple sides.
Here is why Middle East peace talks always fail. American defense companies earned significant revenues from regional arms sales in 2023. European firms contributed as well. A ceasefire means those revenues disappear. Why would the US or European government negotiate against its own economy?
The gatekeepers are not diplomats. They sit in defense ministries, sovereign wealth funds, and oil company offices. When the State Department negotiates, it competes against the Pentagon and Lockheed Martin. Saudi Arabia will never pressure Iran if proxy warfare keeps crude prices high. No mystery here.
Every peace framework addresses the wrong problem. They treat conflict as a territorial dispute instead of an arms market. Both sides already possess weapons. A genuine settlement requires major powers to stop selling them and accept that they will not control the Middle East.
Diplomacy in the Middle East is theater. Defense budgets and oil prices write the script. Foreign ministries just recite lines.
