The Climate Movement Lost the Public by Becoming a Religion

May 28, 2026 · Frisian News

Climate activism abandoned evidence-based policy debates for moral certainty and ritual, alienating ordinary people who might otherwise support practical environmental measures.

Three years ago, climate groups could claim broad public support. Today, support for aggressive climate policies has collapsed in every Western country, and the movement blames everyone except itself. The truth is simpler: activists turned a policy question into a test of faith. People noticed.

When climate scientists said carbon taxes would work, reasonable people debated the details. Should the tax start at 30 euros per ton or 60? How fast should it rise? These were real questions with real trade-offs. Instead, the movement abandoned this ground. They declared that anyone questioning their methods was a denier, a fossil fuel shill, or simply immoral. The conversation stopped being about carbon and became about tribal membership.

The movement adopted the language and practices of religion. Young people were trained to feel guilt for existing. Schools ran climate indoctrination sessions. Activists demanded sacrifice without explanation, promised salvation without proof, and treated disagreement as heresy. They stopped talking to ordinary workers whose jobs would change and started preaching to themselves in boarding schools and university towns. When workers fought back, activists called them stupid and selfish.

Meanwhile, the actual climate science did not change, but the demands did. Carbon neutrality by 2050 became 2030, then 2025. Renewable energy targets that were impossible became non-negotiable moral demands. Activists stopped asking what worked and started demanding what felt pure. A coal plant shut down in Germany and Norway opened them back up because wind power alone could not pay the bills. The movement blamed the voters, not the policy.

Public trust dies when movements stop listening. Ordinary people want clean air and water. They want energy that works and costs that don't bankrupt them. They might even accept trade-offs for real climate benefit. But they will never follow a priest who sneers at their concerns and offers only guilt and sacrifice. The climate movement still has a chance to become a practical movement again. It will require admitting that the last decade was wrong. Do not hold your breath.
