Thousands of sailors gather each August in Sneek for Sneek Week, one of Europe's biggest inland sailing events. The festival draws competitors and spectators from across the continent to the heart of Friesland's water country.

Each August, the small city of Sneek transforms into the sailing capital of northern Europe. Over a thousand boats gather on the Sneekermeer lake, their sails catching the wind in Europe's largest inland sailing championship. The week draws more than 100,000 visitors, many of them sailors who treat Sneek Week as a pilgrimage.

Sneek Week started in 1949 as a modest local race. Today it has grown into a full week of celebration, with races every day across different classes and skill levels. Sailors from Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and beyond compete on these same waters where Frisian fishing boats once sailed. The event sits at the heart of Friesland's sailing culture, a place where water and tradition run deep.

The Sneekermeer has been central to Frisian life for centuries. Sneek itself grew rich from trade and fishing. Now it hosts one of the sport's most respected championships. Competitors praise the challenging winds, the strong organization, and the warmth of the local sailing community.

Beyond the racing, Sneek Week is a celebration of life on the water. The town fills with sailors, families, and visitors who come to watch, eat, and soak in the excitement. Shore parties and social races mix with serious championship sailing. The festival captures what makes Friesland's water culture special: skill, history, and pure joy in being on the water.

If you have ever loved sailing or simply enjoyed watching sails catch the wind, Sneek Week deserves a visit. The event runs each August, drawing people back year after year to this corner of Friesland where the sport feels most alive.
