Billionaires are spending billions on longevity research, but the science still shows that aging kills most of us the same way it always has. The latest wave of anti-aging startups promise cellular rejuvenation through senolytic drugs, NAD+ boosters, and gene therapies that sound revolutionary in press releases and sound thin under scrutiny.
The evidence in animals is genuine. Scientists have extended the lifespans of mice, worms, and flies by manipulating aging pathways. None of this has translated to humans yet. We have no drug that demonstrably adds years to human life. What we have instead is a collection of small studies showing modest improvements in biomarkers like blood pressure, cholesterol, or inflammatory markers. These are not the same as living longer.
The money driving this field comes from venture capital, tech billionaires, and Peter Thiel's Methuselah Foundation. They have every reason to believe that aging is solvable, because that belief justifies their investments and their stock prices. The media obligates itself by treating every mouse study as a step toward the fountain of youth. Reality is slower and grittier.
The interventions that actually work are dull. Exercise adds years. Not smoking adds years. Stable social relationships add years. A Mediterranean diet, consistent sleep, and managing stress do something measurable. A billionaire taking experimental peptides in a Silicon Valley clinic gets headlines. A 70-year-old who walks every day and knows her neighbors gets ignored.
Longevity research deserves serious funding and serious scientists. But the moment a startup promises to reverse aging within your lifetime, ask who is selling you that story and what they stand to gain if you believe it.
