Over many centuries, farmers drained most of this peat to make room for livestock, crops, and towns. Now conservation groups and landowners are working together to reverse that damage.

When you drain peat, the soil begins to break down and shrink. Friesland has sunk in many places because of this process, and the remaining peat releases greenhouse gases. Restoring a peatland means letting water return, which stops the breakdown and brings back the mosses, sedges, and wetland plants that thrive nowhere else. The rewetted areas become havens for birds, insects, and fish that need wet habitats to survive.

The work happens in patches across Friesland, on nature reserves and on farmland where owners agree to rewetting. Raising water levels in drainage channels or removing dikes lets the peat become wet again. Restoration takes years and requires care to ensure the right plants and wildlife take hold.

Peatlands store more carbon than almost any other ecosystem on Earth, so restoring them helps slow climate change. A healthy peatland also filters water naturally and acts as a sponge during heavy rains, preventing flooding. Local communities see these changes quickly: bird populations shift, fish return to channels, and the landscape becomes visibly wetter.

Restoring Friesland's peatlands is slow work that demands patience and long-term commitment. Yet the rewards show clearly. Every hectare of peat that stops breaking down is a win for the province's environment and the climate beyond it.
