Latin America Is Turning Away from Washington
March 24, 2026 · Frisian News
Trade deals collapse and military cooperation shrinks as Latin American governments prioritize regional partnerships over US influence. The shift reflects a decade of neglect and broken promises from Washington.
Mexico and Brazil have moved toward trade arrangements that exclude the United States entirely. The move continues a pattern of commercial agreements that Washington failed to join or shape. The cold fact is that US policy toward the region has grown thinner and more reactive in recent years.
Chile, Argentina, and Colombia have each reduced military cooperation with the Pentagon while deepening ties with India and Japan instead. Arms sales figures show American defense contracts in the region have declined in recent years. Officers once trained at Fort Benning now study in São Paulo and Santiago. Local defense industries grow stronger when Washington stops seeing Latin America as a backyard to manage rather than a region to engage with respect.
Washington's own behavior created this vacuum. Tariffs on Brazilian steel, repeated visa denials for business leaders, and a string of trade negotiators who treated meetings as photo ops rather than serious diplomacy poisoned relationships. When the Trump administration imposed immigration penalties without warning, Central American governments simply stopped waiting for reconciliation and signed infrastructure deals with China instead. Trust does not rebuild quickly after that kind of carelessness.
The shift tells a larger story about American power abroad. The United States still has money and weapons, but it no longer has the credibility or attention span that once made it indispensable to the region. Latin America did not abandon Washington out of ideology. It abandoned Washington because Washington had already left. Small countries have long memories for broken promises, and they adapt faster than large empires notice.
No sudden crisis forced this change. Instead, a thousand small decisions and neglects accumulated into a new reality. By the time Washington wakes up to the fact that Mexico and Brazil now set their own terms, the region will have learned to live without American approval. That shift, once complete, takes decades to reverse.
