How Sugar Became the Most Political Ingredient in the Food Supply

July 28, 2026 · Frisian News

Mexico's sugar tax failed to reduce obesity, yet governments worldwide kept similar taxes anyway. The real battle was never about health but about whether governments can use taxes to control behavior.

English

Mexico's sugar tax, introduced in 2014, cut consumption by 6 percent in the first year. Obesity rates climbed anyway. The government kept the tax. It had become something else.

Governments love sugar taxes. They raise revenue without looking like income taxes. Public health organizations promoted them with studies showing they work. Few mentioned that anti-sugar funding came from diet-food companies, artificial sweetener makers, and weight-loss operations. Dig into any moral crusade and you find money underneath.

The actual data is weaker than headlines claimed. Consumption fell slightly in some countries. In others, nothing changed. Obesity rates kept climbing everywhere with equal stubbornness. What did change: poor families paid more for groceries. Wealthy families bought what they wanted.

Sugar became useful to governments for reasons that had nothing to do with health. The US subsidizes corn. The EU subsidizes beet sugar. Governments protect their own producers while taxing the finished product. This is protectionism dressed as public health. The voters never saw the clothing.

The real fight was never about sugar. It was about whether governments should use taxes to control behavior they dislike, and whether they get to decide what poor people eat. Sugar lost. But the machinery stays in place, ready for the next ingredient.
