Twenty-five years after gas extraction began in Groningen, the industry still leaves contaminated sites without completing remediation work. Local communities face bills for cleanup while companies retreat.
A former gas processing site near Uithuizen sits empty and fenced off, its soil laden with heavy metals and mineral oils that seep toward groundwater. The company that operated it, a subsidiary of a larger energy corporation, declared the work finished in 2019 and walked away. Local officials say the cleanup never met the original standards. The site now waits for someone to pick up the bill while contamination spreads.
This scene repeats across Groningen. The province extracted natural gas for decades, first from onshore wells, then from deeper deposits. The boom made some landowners wealthy but left the land scarred. Processing plants, storage facilities, and pipelines needed decommissioning. The law says operators must clean what they damage, but enforcement has been weak. Companies often declare a site "safe enough" after basic work, then ignore remaining problems.
The regional government lacks the budget to force full remediation or to sue for costs. The companies claim they followed regulations at the time, even though those regulations were loose. The gas money flowed to national coffers for roads and pensions. The contamination stays behind in Groningen soil. This pattern shows how Dutch environmental policy favors easy corporate exit over hard local repair.
The cleanup will take decades, if it happens at all. A handful of small environmental groups keep records and push local mayors to act. They get ignored more often than heard. Groningen's citizens did not choose to host the nation's gas industry. They get the gases. They get the holes. They get the bill.
