Friesland's Ancient Pole-Vault Sport Is Having Its Best Season in Decades

May 18, 2026 · Frisian News

Fierljeppen, vaulting across canals with a long pole, is drawing record crowds and producing a generation of champions who are putting Frisian culture back on the map.

English

On a summer evening in Winsum, a crowd of several hundred people lines the bank of a narrow canal. A young man sprints toward the water, plants a twelve-metre pole in the mud, and begins climbing hand over hand as he swings across. He lands cleanly on the opposite bank, 22.41 metres from where he started. The crowd erupts.

Fierljeppen, literally "far leaping", is one of Friesland's oldest traditions. It began as a practical way for farmers to cross the canals that divide the flat, watery landscape. Somewhere along the way it became a competitive sport, with national records, formal competitions, and devoted fans who follow the circuit each summer.

This season has been exceptional. Attendance is up 40% from five years ago. Youth participation has doubled since a school programme introduced fierljeppen alongside football and swimming. Three athletes under the age of 22 are competing at the national level.

What explains the revival? Those close to the sport point to a growing appetite among young Frisians for something distinctly their own. In a media landscape dominated by Dutch and English content, fierljeppen is one of the few things that is unmistakably, irreducibly Frisian.

It requires no translation.

Op in simmerjûn yn Winsum stiet in publyk fan in pear hûndert minsken oan 'e kante fan in smal kanaal. In jongeman sprinct nei it wetter ta, plant in twaalve meter lange peal yn it slik, en begjint hân foar hân omheech te klimmen as hy oerswinge. Hy lânet skjin op 'e oare oever, 22,41 meter fan wêr't hy begûn. It publyk barst los.

Fierljeppen, letterlik "fier springen", is ien fan 'e âldste tradysjes fan Fryslân. It begûn as in praktyske manier foar boeren om 'e kanalen te oerstekken. Ergens op 'e wei waard it in kompetityfsport, mei nasjonale records en tawije fans.

Dit seizoen is útsûnderlik. It publyk is 40% heger as fiif jier lyn. Jongereindielnimme is ferdûbele sûnt in skoalprogramma fierljeppen yntrodusearre. Trije atleten ûnder 22 jier konkurrearje op nasjonaal nivo.

Wat ferklearret de werfining? Dejingen dy't ticht by de sport stean wize op in groeiende appetit ûnder jonge Fryske minsken foar eat dat ûndûbelsinnich harren eigen is.
