The Climate Movement Lost the Public by Becoming a Religion

Climate activists traded evidence-based persuasion for moral certainty and ritual, turning ordinary people away from environmental concerns. The movement's insistence on lifestyle purity and doomsday messaging alienated the working class it needed most.
A Dutch factory worker on a modest wage hears climate activists demand he stop eating meat, drive an electric car he cannot afford, and feel guilty about his existence. He watches as wealthy activists fly to conferences while lecturing him about carbon footprints. He notices that climate rules never seem to bind the rich, only the poor. He stops listening. This is not a failure of climate science. It is a failure of the climate movement itself, which abandoned reason for righteousness.
The shift happened gradually. Climate advocates moved from "here are the facts, here is what we should do" to "if you question any part of our solution, you are evil." They created a theology around carbon that brooks no debate, permits no tradeoffs, and demands constant sacrifice from people who already have little. They turned environmental protection into a purity test rather than a practical project. When Extinction Rebellion glued themselves to roads and told workers they could not get to their jobs, they did not persuade. They created contempt.
Religions offer comfort, identity, and belonging. The climate movement offers guilt, shame, and endless commandments you cannot obey because the goal posts move daily. Today you recycle. Tomorrow you learn recycling was never the answer. You buy an electric car. The movement tells you electric cars are also wrong because the batteries are mined by the poor in Africa. You can never be pure enough. You can never be saved.
Meanwhile, real environmental problems get ignored. Plastic choking our rivers. Chemical pollution in drinking water. Soil depletion that threatens food security. These issues demand solutions, not virtue signals. They require engineering and industry and wealth creation, not Instagram posts about how flying is murder. The climate religion crowds out practical environmentalism.
The public did not reject climate science. People rejected a movement that treated them as moral children needing correction. Ordinary folks understand that energy transitions take time, that people need to eat, and that lecturing a working man about his carbon sin while you board a private jet destroys your credibility. The climate movement will recover influence only when it remembers that persuasion works better than condemnation.
